LAMONTAGNE GALLERY (Boston) is pleased to announce the second exhibition in a two-part collaboration with ANDREW RAFACZ (Chicago).
The exhibition features new works by ZACHARY BUCHNER, ANDREAS FISCHER and PHILIP VANDERHYDEN, three artists who wrestle with similar concerns in their work: surface, mark making, and palette. With this exhibition, each artist was asked to make a new series of paintings that also address, directly or indirectly, ideas of weather and temperature during this time of the year. Zachary Buchner has returned in part to earlier work while looking forward, creating works with a decidedly more muted surface, yet still maintaining a vibrant under-painting. Andreas Fischer, concerned, in part, with the weight and placement of the painterly mark, has created several new canvases that offer an incandescent, abstracted experience with landscape and image. Philip Vanderhyden, has produced paintings that continue to investigate process and surface. Their stormy facades intermittently obscure an undercurrent of warm color.
ZACHARY BUCHNER (Canadian, b. 1979) lives and works in Chicago. He received his M.F.A from Northwestern University in 2005. Recent group exhibitions include Let Your Light In at Country Club, Los Angeles; A Person of Color, curated by Jose Lerma at Green Gallery, Milwaukee; Under Construction Show at the poor Farm (The Suburban) Manawa, Wisconsin; and New Icon at LUMA, Chicago, and Spectral Landscape, curated by Pamela Fraser and John Neff, at Gallery 400, Chicago. His second solo exhibition at the gallery, Just Say Yes, was presented earlier this year.
ANDREAS FISCHER (American, b. 1971) lives and works in Chicago. He holds an M.F.A in studio art and an M.A. in art history from the University of Illinois at Chicago; he also attended the Universitat der Kunste, Berlin. He has had exhibitions at the MCA, Chicago; Mattress Factory Museum, Pittsburgh; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Gahlberg Gallery at the College of Dupage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois; Devening Projects, Chicago; Hudson Franklin Gallery, New York; Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago; Important Projects, Oakland; and Regina Rex, Brooklyn, among others.
PHILIP VANDERHYDEN (American, b. 1978) lives and works in New York. He received his M.F.A. from Northwestern University in 2004. He has had solo exhibitions at CTRL, Houston and Light & Sie, Dallas, in 2009. He exhibited at the CAM St. Louis with Douglas Ross, in 2009. Group exhibitions include I Speak Now from the Aesthetic and Artistic Point of View When I Say that Life with Michelle Grabner is Dull, curated by Michelle Grabner, at Leo Koening, NY; Gradation, curated by Garth Weiser, in Lisbon, Portugal. Large Abstractions at The Suburban, Oak Park; A Person of Color, curated by Jose Lerma at the Green Gallery, Milwaukee, and Data Trash at I-20, NY, curated by Chris Dorland, earlier this year. His curatorial project, Tracking the Thrill: Gretchen Bender Restaged, was presented at the Poor Farm (Wisconsin) last summer and is currently in process of traveling.
